“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.”

Both the quote and the article highlight the dangers of inactive bystanders. Even if someone isn't committing a crime like murder or genocide, being complacent is letting it happen. It's almost like permission because if no one is stopping it there must be nothing wrong. Indifference is understandable, because getting involved is terrifying sometimes, but it really is a danger.
Natalie DeMarchi pd.6
My opinion about the article is someone should have helped the girl who got stabbed or should have brought it to someones attention before hand, because the problem just kept progressing. The quote I agreed with the message because no single thing is the same everything is different.

The failure of people to report or to speak up and voice their opinions will eventually turn into something bigger than it originally was.

This article relates to the quote in the way that people shouldn't hate, and when something bad happens, no one seems to are sometimes

The Quote and the article to me was about how everything has options and life depends on options ,If ,and buts and would've and could'ves and these options make up you're life .

This shows how numb society has gotten to cases of terrible actions. They don't have that same moral value that our ancestors did so long ago. People have no reaction to the wrongdoings of this planet. Indifference is a scary thing considering how dangerous the world is getting.

The article is a description of what Elie Wiesel's quote is discussing. No one wanted to call the police or go help the woman because they didn't want to risk their own lives to help or save the woman. Had at least one person choose to call the police or go help her to safety Kitty could have been alive. Even when the people were asked why they didn't at least call the police to help they just said they didn't know or gave excuses like "I was tired". Yet after Kitty had already died and the ambulance was picking up her body that is when everyone came outside to see what was happening.

The quote and the article are similar because simple decisions and choices can lead to something for better, or for worse.
Both the quote and the article highlight dangerous things and the unhelpful bystanders. You don't need any permission because if someone is crying out or needing help you help them. On the other hand, getting involved is terrifying sometimes. Yes, fear can stop you but in the long run, when you need help someone will be there for you. Things can be stopped before it gets really bad.

The quote and the article shows that everyone has an option to do something. The quote and the article show that even if the situation is different from yours doesn't mean you can't speak on it or help.
Devon Patrick Pd: 3
I agree with the quote, the article also backs up the quote. People don't care till a situation climaxes or ends in a bad way. The witnesses could've called the police after the girl was being followed or at least when she got stabbed the first time.
Jose Capistran Pd1
this shows that people don't do anything and it because i feel like they think others would do something so they my wait to step in but then is is too late. but that doesn't really mean that its bad and like the quote said its indifference.

The choice of doing something and how much interest you show is what the quote meant for me. Each person has the choice of how much interest they put into a certain something. In terms of the book Night, the people of Sighet brushed off the warnings Moishe told them about the Germans. They did not show interest because they were afraid it was true. In terms of the article, these people who heard Kitty scream chose to stay away and not call the police because they did not want to get involved, being scared led them to show no interest. Lastly, in today's society, especially in high school, kids show no interest in telling adults if they see problems because they are too afraid of being labeled as a "snitch". I admit I am too like that, but we don't live in a perfect world.
Valeria Villeda Pd 3
Both he article and the quote show how strong societys apathy has become to the point where everyone has become a bystander, no one speaks out for anyone, or can even witness a murder and yet no one ever called for help.

The article is a very symbolic piece of writing. It shows how, on our society and in our world, people have constant situations and opportunities to step up ans speak out against something but, a lot of people opt not to for either fear of getting involved or simply because it doesn't affect them. A lot of people feel as though the problem isn't their problem to resolve. The part that seals this is at the very end of the paper when it says that, only after the ambulance came and took her away, that's when people came out their houses to investigate, not wanting to get involved when the problem was in full force.
The poem brings to mind that the opposite to good or positivity isn't bad, but how we as humans ignore or don't address it.
I think both the article and quote show how over the years society has changed so much. We think all the problems we have are cause of eachother or something specifically so really all the problems we have are cause of ourselves. This generation has such a i don't care attitude that we are the reasons we have alot of the problems we have everyday.
Emmely Alvarez Pd 3
The quote and the article have a lot in common . People do the opposite of helping others instead they watch . Nobody was doing the ability to do something right because their afraid of the consequence . If it wasn't for one simple call the women would've been safe and alive .

The fear of people to say something or speak up can become in something more bigger than is gonna affect someone life only because they are fear that is gonna happen somethings to them.

Both the quote and the article show how dangerous indifference is. In the quote it highlights how indifference is the opposite of all things good. The article proves that indifference cannot be excused or explained away, it is truly the act of selfishness and not caring for the sake of others. Indifference is active in present day with global warming, older people decide not to care about it solely because it won't affect them and they trust the younger generation will handle it themselves.
Betanya Woldgiorgis pd. 3
The quote shows how the fear of getting involved shows how indifferent we are. The man who heard the dying womans cries could've helped her, but simply didn't just because he didn't want to be nosy. He didn't hate the woman, ut jst didn't know her well enough to save her life. Or to simply call 911
Aminata Souare Pd.3
I feel like indifference is just what humans use as a pathway to what not get involved in something that will have consequence to them. In the reading, the bystanders' witnesses didn't call the police or "get involved" in any way because they seemed to be scared. Through all the excuses used it all came down to just not wanting to deal with the consequence and being afraid. In the quote, people use indifference to have a reason to not deal with love, religion, etc. Both the article and the reading all have to do with indifference and the lack of concern and sometimes even empathy to certain everyday life scenarios. In a sense, if you don't love you'll hate. At the end of the day, it's just human nature.

they both are the same because they talk about how people who could help out the problem just stand there and do nothing. how fear could come inbetween people getting involved with other because of the bad out comes that could happen.
Leah GS Pd. 7
The article enforces Elie Wiesel's quote, when he says that the opposite to love isn't hate but instead it is indifference and people's lack of caring about others. When bystanders heard Kitty Genovese screaming for help they didn't do anything to help because they simply didn't care or didn't think it was their problem and were unsure about getting involved. Those people didn't have hate for her, but instead lacked the care and concern for another human being that led to her death. This is also a representation of people in society today and how people do hateful things to others not because they hate them but because they really do not think that they have any responsibility to help others and because they believe that if something does not directly impact them, it isn't a problem that they have to solve and they should just overlook it.

I feel like people shouldn't have just stood by and watched I feel like, not in the moment but afterward tell someone what you saw. This article showed indifference by people watching and standing by. Their is also indifference in "Night" because they didn't believe Moishe when he was warning them about the Germans. The world today also has so much indifference because many people don't care enough about certain situations that really they should be more focused and aware of.
Joseph Huddle

I disagree with the quote and article because I think that they look upon the world from a very closed off perspective. The world as a whole is not made worse by indifference. While there are times when indifference makes things worse, but to say that indifference is this worlds evil more than anything else is false. Meanwhile, hate always makes the situation worse. There is never a time when nobody is hurt by hate; even if a hateful person doesn't act on their hate, that hateful person is still hut by it. That person's experiences are tainted by the hate that they feel.
dia pd. 6
It was sad how no one said anything or even looked outside until they heard the sound of the ambulance. There is indifference in Night because other people do not seem to help the Jews and worry more about their own safety. The world today has a lot of indifference and people seem to not think about other people's situations more and more.
Madison Jones pd6
The article shows that if something doesn't concern a person they don't feel the need to say anything. In my opinion I honestly think that it has just come to the point where people are so lazy and it is dangerous because there were two times when someone could have checked on the women or not even leave the house and just called the police but instead they decided to go back to sleep because were too tired. The examples of indifference in "Night" is when nobody listened to Moishe because it did't happen to them. They could have done something but instead they felt that they would be fine and they continued on with life. It just shows that the world is only worried about themselves or their families, which hindsight makes since but if everyone worried about more then just their families then many things could be prevented.

1. MY reaction to the article is that it's really surprising that the people didn't help, especially when the people saw the man stabbing her and told j=him to stop and he just shrugged and they didn't do anything else. Also, she was screaming and yelling that she was dying and that he stabbed her and they didn't do anything; even if it was a lover's quarrel or they didn't want to get involved, that isn't a good reason for letting someone get stabbed.
2. In Night, there is indifference when the first foreign Jews were deported and no one did anything, even though they knew it was wrong.
3. In the world today, a lot of people are indifferent about mass shootings, sexual assault, climate change, and many other things. I think it's wrong to not care about something just because it doesn't affect you, because you never know if it could affect you in the future and even if it doesn't, you should care about the other people and put yourself in their/ their family's shoes.
Atsem Pd.6
I feel as if the witnesses should've said something. The indifference is the bystanders didn't care for the murder and thought it wasn't their problem or concern. The world is still full of bystanders who don't act on something when they see something wrong.
Adam Levy
In the article, the people were more worried about their own problems, for example being tired or afraid of getting hurt. In "Night" a similar thing occurs when they are told about the Germans killing Jews in the forest and not fleeing to the British controlled Palestine. Even today people are apathetic about racial injustices made against minorities.
Jordan Butler Pd: 6
In the article it's absolutely disgusting how they didn't even call the police on the assailant, they just watch and yelled. The indifference in night is how they don't care for safety or finding it. indifference in the world today is other people

The quote, the world today, and the article all relate because it takes just one person to make a difference or stand up for what's right, yet people still make excuses not to. Because people don't speak up, more people disproportionately become victims to what is wrong.
Sofia Norberte P7
1) The quote shows indifference because it's trying to say that not doing something at all, is the same as doing the wrong thing. If you're not standing up for what's right, you're letting the wrong thing happen, and letting it continue.
2) The article shows the negative effects of indifference at it's finest. Although they didn't physically pick up the knife and stab her, the indifference of all 38 neighbors killed the woman too. If any of them cared a little more to call the police right when it happened, she would've lived.
3) The world is full of indifference. Many people don't seem to care about issues unless it directly affects them. If more people cared more about issues that didn't directly affect them, lots of things could change. People also see that a lot of the things in the world are wrong, but do or say nothing about. By doing so, they're letting the pattern repeat and continuing to let the bad things happen.

In the article, it is absolutely horrible how people just watched her and heard her cry for help and did not do a thing about it. With Elie Weisel's quote it shows the world we live in today make horrible evil decisions without even thinking about it or trying to be evil or anything by being indifference when it comes to thinking. By not thinking or paying attention to your actions shows how bad of a scenario can turn out.

In the night when the Jews were being taken away, the neighbors were watching and not doing anything since it didn't apply to them that a consequence of indifference. In the article, people didn't want to help a women get murdered because it wasn't their business and they were probably in fear which shows a consequence of indifference. In our world today we just don't seem to care for things that don't apply to use a consequence of indifference.
Jazmyn Padmore Pd.7
The quote shows how if you're indifferent, you can't love or hate or live or die, you just don't find anything important.
The article showed how 38 people saw something happen an didn't do anything. If someone had said something, that woman would still be alive. The world today shows that everyone is selfish or caught up with themselves that they wouldn't help someone in need.
Destani Warner pd.7
People not helping that woman in the article did not surprise me. It shows that if the situation doesn't concern you, you won't get involved, you just watch it happen and hope it doesn't happen to you. In Night when the first foreign jews were being deported nobody helped or tried to stop it, they just watched, that's indifferent. In the world today a lot of stuff happens and the first thing people think to do is pull their phones out and record instead of trying to stop it.

The article relates to the quote because it shows when people do not get involved in can just make a situation much worse. The world is full of indifference we're kind of selfish if you really think about it. Most of the time we only care about a situation if it effects us. Negative consequences can happen just like what happened in the article.
Monica D Pd 7
The book Night shows the consequences of indifference because when Elie and his family were being taken, people were just watching from their windows and they didn't say anything to try and stop the situation. If someone would've spoken up, none of what happened would've happened. The article also shows indifference because when the woman was being stabbed, people saw it but they didn't say anything. Then, because of their ignorance, she was killed. Today, many people are indifferent towards things and it can have negative effects. For example, a kid or any person can be seen being treated bad but some people just won't stand up for them. But if it was them in the same situation, they would want someone to do something about it.

this demonstrates that people don't do anything and i feel like others would do something, so they my wait to step in but then is is too late. but that doesn't really mean that its bad like the quote said its's just indifference.
The quote and the article both shows indifference meaning people do the opposite of helping others instead they watch. The indifference in this world today is that about to same sometimes people do go up and help but some times that's not the case.
Jessica Servellon Period 7
The quote, the article, and the world today show how saying one thing can impact something so much to make a huge change. Whenever something doesn't involve a person they don't really think about what is going to happen to other people who are involved because they say it's not their problem. There are people who would want to say something, but they are too scared because many people put their safety in front of other's safety.
Elvis Kulhahay Pd 7
In the article, it shocks me that no one didn't do anything about the murder and it this somewhat reflects in modern society, most people tend not to care about a serious situation like racial discrimination, poverty, or even climate change. People make up the excuse of being indifferent to avoid being involved in serious situations.
The book night and the article both show the inference on being about a boy who was taken from his home and his neighborhood just stood there and watched it happen none of them did anything to help. And in the article people stood by and watched a woman be murdered in cold blood and when she died they decided to call the police. this connects to a real-world problem with people who could be in a domestic abuse relationship and people know that's going on but are not doing anything about it.
The quote shows indifference because it's trying to show that when you don't do the right thing it means that you are letting wrong things happen because if you step up you can change things.
The article shows indifference because the 38 neighbors were witnesses of something wrong that was happening and they didn't do anything to change it because they didn't call the police for help and they just left the woman to die. Our world shows indifference because bad things happen in our world but nobody cares if it doesn't affect them.

The quote and the article is the has the same concept of indifference. They talk about how people could have did something to help but they didn't. Ellie Wiesel uses the word indifference to say that people lack interest, concern or sympathy for others. The article talks about the lack of concern and sympathy in the community because they didn't care when Miss Genovese was getting stabbed. Another way in which a lack of interest and sympathy was implemented within Miss Genovese's community was when a man was interviewed by an officer in which the man stated, "I didn't want to get involved,". In the end, Wiesel and the article used indiffrence to show how some people have a lack of interest, concern and (or) sympathy for others.
Nina Nguyen PD:3
The quote and the article both relate to each other. They both show that in our society now, people are choosing not to involve themselves in different situations and they are choosing to not care. For example, in the article where the woman was murdered, the bystanders could've done more and spoke up but instead they decided not to, which contributes to more of these crimes. When Elie Wiesel says that "the opposite of love is not hate, its indifference," he means that when you choose to not care, its basically the same thing as choosing to hate.
Sam

Elie Wiesel and the article have a common theme of indifference. In Elie Wiesel's case it was when he was pushed and shoved around like trash and in the article it was the poor woman that no wanted to help. This shows that indifference leads to bad things. Some not as big as others, but why take the risk because you may never know what might happen.
Sydney Hutko Pd. 3
The quote and the article relate to each other by showing examples of indifference. They both show things that take time to do, which can show that your caring about it. Like in the quote, it takes time to make an art piece or have faith in something. In the article the neighbors could have cared about the incident and could have called the police, but they choose to go back to bed while someone was dying. Indifference means lack of interest or concern towards something. Both the article and the quote show that if you don't take the time to care then your apart of society that chooses indifference.
Viet Ngo Pd:3
The quote and the article are relatable towards each other due to the idea of the basic reaction being mysteriously contrasted. The 38 were oblivious towards the murder of the girl which tragically resulted in her death. The quote expresses the idea of the people due to how it's not that they hate her and it's not that they're afraid; it's unexplainable really. They're not afraid of being brave to save her because people are a mysterious case. There could always be an opposite towards something and yet people weren't. It's unexplainable, but in actuality, it's indifferent because nobody can explain what was going through these people's brains. Their actions can't be explained and I think the quote and article help add to each others case. The mystery behind people; their indifference's!
David Fian Pd.6
Both the article and the quote relate to one another by showing similar views or examples on indifference, because in the article the failure of response by people to communicate or say whats on their mind will making a smaller conflict larger.
Jordyn Hargrove
The article and the quote both highlight that the in-activeness in someones feeling towards anything is basically you by-standing anything wrong doing because of the fear that they have which is understandable but it's also saying that if anyone does anything wrong and if nobody goes into help that they can continue doing what they do and that theirs nothing wrong with it which is hurtful to the person or thing getting the treatment. So indifference is basically the fear in the back of our mind saying we can't do anything but watch or walk away.
The quote and the article are both relatable of how if there was indifference it would've changed the fact that 38 people saw something happen an didn't do anything. If someone had said something, that woman would still be alive one word would've changed her life.
