The American Dream...THIS POST IS FOR TWO WEEKS!

I, Too, Sing America by Langston Hughes

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—

I, too, am America.

The post for this week:

This poem speaks of the American Dream and what it means to us and to those who have come before us. What is your understanding of the American Dream?

The post for next week:

Read the poem by Langston Hughes, one many of you may be familiar with, and comment in your post about its message. Discuss the relationship between the poem's message and either King or Malcolm X's message as well.

My understanding of the American Dream is where all kinds of people have a chance to be successful in life. No matter where you've been or who you are, you have a chance. Most immigrants come to America for a better life for them and their families. That is the American dream to me, a chance to live a better life than you did yesterday.

The American Dream to me is, the expectation of equality and freedom for everyone and being able to achieve your ultimate goals in life. The American Dream is the thought that anyone can become anything no matter race, religion or where you come from.

My understanding of the american dream is that in order to achieve it we must go through struggle first. From our struggles we shall learn something from these encounters that help build us into a stronger person. The more turmoil we face and the more we overcome it; the more stronger we shall become by the end. In order to achieve the american dream we must face challenges to grow stronger; then later achieve the dream!

For me, the American Dream is an unrealistic expectation we as Americans have set up for ourselves. The American Dream is going to college, getting a good job, then getting married, have a couple kids, and living in a large house surrounded by a white picket fence, only for your children to have an even better than life than the one you had. It really isn't realistic for every person, especially considering that not everyone is socially set up to succeed in life. The poem itself shows a different American dream for a different type of person. In the poem, I think their American Dream was that they would be considered equal to others and actually be able to sit with others at a table of peace. I think the poem is talking about the African American American Dream back in a time of slavery or at least segregation.

The American Dream is to be able to be seen by company and also, be apart of the company. Being able to sit with them, talking, laughing, and eating. Able to be together and not be considered different. No one will tell them to eat somewhere else, but to tell them that they can eat together.

To my understanding the American dream is to be free. To be free to pursue what makes you happy and content in life. The american dream is also for everyone to be equal regardless of race, gender or religion. Unfortunately Americans are still not equal despite the many years we have tried to accomplish this. Men still make more than women and African Americans are still discriminated against.

American Dream is to be treated like others or equally, also to be given the same chance someone else would get no matter who they are or what they stand for. For example he wants to eat at the table when everyone else comes instead of being told to eat in the kitchen because he is "the darker brother."

My understanding of the American dream is that everyone is equal in the dream. We all get to do things that we want to accomplish. The American dream is to have freedom to do anything you think of. In the American dream there is equal opportunity for everyone.

I think the American dream is everyone equal together. I think there are simularites between this poem and MLK's message because MLK was trying to stop segregation and encourage everyone to support equal rights. The poem was trying to show the same thing when he said he was going to sit in the kitchen tommorrow, it was showing that all you need is confidence and eventually people will see what's right.

The american dream to me is when a group of people go through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work, rather than by chance but purposely do it so that they could live in a world that people could help each other and by people i mean white help colored and colored help white. the american dream it the thought that anyone could put their mind to something and do it not only alone but with the help from others

This passage showed me how the american dream can be altered so quickly. The American dream is a set table full of food, and a full table of guests laughing, and eating, having a good time. But the next day will be the exact opposte. One day people will want to have fun, and the day they won't. For a black man, his white guests will want him to make jokes and have fun. But the next day they will just ignore him, because they don't need anything from him anymore.

From what I understand, the American Dream is the belief that your goals can always be achieved in America. No matter what the color of your skin is, or what income you make, America will guarantee everyone justice, liberty, and happiness. Many people believe in the American Dream and they want to leave their home countries and move to America because they think they'll be granted with success. In my opinion, the American Dream doesn't always live up to what it's thought to be because of various factors such as political corruption and a harsh society.

The message of this poem is to state that everyone is and should be equal. Dr.King's message and the message of this poem are related because they both say that everyone should be equal and treated the same.

The understanding of the American Dream is more identified as a belief of anyone that believes no matter where they were born or what class there in they define themselves as an American . The ultimate achievement of the american Dream is when you know you worked your hardest , and you risked your life to achieve it and make you proud of who you are.

My understanding of the American Dream is living in America and having a succesful life no matter who you are or where you come from. Many people like immigrants idealize the American lifestyle which is why many come o the U.S to live out their own "American Dream".

Dr. King also had a very vivid "Amerian Dream" but I feel like both these pieces speak different lengths and run deeper than just African American blood. Hughes and Dr. king are both two very powerful and motivated Civil rights activists. I feel like the American dream is somebody's perspective of what it means to be an American and that comes with how you treated and looked as in society. Americans dream is what it means to live in America and be successful and treated like a union than more of a "flaw"(Skin color, sexuality, income, background, etc.)

This message is very similar to MLK message because they both have a sold statement and have a point with reason . In this Poem the reason was he/she didn't want to be looked as a color and wanted to sit at the Dinner table with everybody else instead of eating in the kitchen . Therefor when the "Company"come they said "I'll be at the table, Nobody will Dare say eat in the kitchen then". This a statement towards the people there saying as your not going to tell me go eat in the kitchen infront of the guest so Ill eat at the table like a normal person

My understanding of the American Dream was for people who moved to this country to live a better life for their family/children. People traveled to Ellis Island and had to go through a long process just to even get to and into the country, and if you had a particular sickness or disease you were not accepted and had to go back home. The American Dream is still discussed till this day, because of how important those two words are and what they TRULY mean.

Meaning, no matter who you are, your race or color of your skin, everyone is free to be happy and do what makes them happy. It is where everyone can have a job and fit in society without being told so otherwise by someone else. The American dream is also giving everyone equal opportunities and having a better life.

The American Dream is the ideal life for Americans. To achieve this seemingly impossible goal is to have a house, a job, a family that you love, and most importantly, a happy life. This is what many consider to be success. Many people immigrated to America because they heard stories of the opportunities and the things that this life can be. However, to many this proved to be impossibly difficult and their dreams were crushed by the elitist society in our country.

My understanding of the American Dream is the ultimate idea of having a sustainable life with enough fortune with hard work. Such a concept is also the reason why a good portion of immigrants come to America in the first place. Through this poem, it shows that African-Americans look forward to the day that they don't have to be treated as if they're lower than whites and will earn their prestige through hard work.

My understanding of the American Dream is that everyone has the opportunity to work hard and make something of themselves or move upwards in society. This consists of a few parts: minimized discrimination (I would say none, but there will always be those people), opportunities, and taking advantage of them yourself. This combines to give people the chance to be great on their own terms without people holding them back for things that are irrelevant to their capabilities (race, gender, religion, etc.).

My understanding of the American Dream is to be more successful in America than where they came from. So for example, in the country they previously lived in, they probably did not have freedom, so in America, they can achieve what they've always dream of. My understanding of the American dream is a fair society, one that does not discriminate other people because of their color. The American Dream is the freedom & rights of all citizens of America, that dream in the modern day is a reality but back then it was just hope. in the poem, the narrator is an African American & works in a company, because of his background he is allowed to eat in the kitchen, Its the past where segregation is legal, but the narrator was confident he/she believed in the American dream; freedom & equality. today we don't see segregation too much, we believed they knew better than to legalize it.
